We conducted a comprehensive architectural survey of the Helikon Hotel in Keszthely, an iconic hotel on the shores of Lake Balaton, prior to its planned extensive renovation. The goal of the project was to create a detailed, reliable digital model that accurately captures both the architectural and structural characteristics of the hotel.

The work took place outside the tourist season, allowing our team to carry out the multi-day on-site survey undisturbed while enjoying the hotel's hospitality. Since no authentic plans were available, we also searched the building's archives for historical documents, records, and period blueprints as part of the project. A key objective was to gain a precise understanding of the load-bearing structure, which was essential for the technical foundation of the renovation. To this end, we performed on-site excavations at several points, stripping the flooring down to the reinforced concrete slab to accurately document the position and dimensions of the individual ribs. As a result of the survey, we delivered two integrated digital models: an architectural model containing the building's full geometry and spatial structure, and a structural model representing the building stripped down to its reinforced concrete frame.

A brief history of the Helikon Hotel

The Helikon Hotel in Keszthely opened its doors in 1971 as one of the most distinctive modernist hotels on the shores of Lake Balaton. As one of the era's defining tourism investments, it quickly became a fixture of the lakeside town's identity with its characteristic facade louvers and terraced massing. The current renovation aims to restore the hotel as a worthy representative of the Balaton architectural heritage of the sixties and seventies, within a modern technical and operational environment.

We would like to thank the official website of the Helikon Hotel for the on-site photos.
